Salt
A 29-minute experimental made from Super-8 film, Hi-8 video, found and original still photographs, “Salt” deals with identity and mimesis, memory and history; routes and paths of colonialism as they choreograph those of people, goods and commerce today — a colonial world that structures the modern city.
The project began with the artist’s discovery of his grandfather’s lost photo album, showing a secretive life as an amateur photographer while a radio operator on a merchant marine ship. Hunt reads missing letters that he imagines from his grandfather’s pen and stages himself into the mis-en-scene of his grandfather’s photos, while, like in a Situationist map, he attempts to trace his grandfather’s past footsteps throughout present day Chicago.
